Tóm tắt The extension or narrowing of meaning, metaphor and metonymy are considered different , distinctive, and even opposite devices of semantic transfer. This article attempts to point out thats there are close relationships between these semantic transfer rules which are sometimes difficult to distinguish. Metaphor and metonymy are similar in that they are both the transfer of the name of one phenomenon to the name of another phenomenon of a different kind based on similar relations. They fiffer in whether there is a similar basis or ascription based on the analogy of properties or attibutes. When a word meaning is extended or narrowed, the thing or phenomenon that word signifies still remains within the scope of that thing or category. They differ onli in the scope of jbjects belonging to whether the concept indicated is widened or narrowed. As for the semantic transfer bay metaphor and metonymy, the things or phenomenons signified by the word are of different kinds. In addition, the extension and narrowing of meaning occur only within a name;they do not give athing a new name. Metonymy and metaphor, in contrast, create a new name for the thing which may already have a name. All the three semantic transfer rules are the product of association; thay hav similarities and differences, and probably intermediate phenomena. These make the boundaries of semantic transfer rules fuzzy.
