Tóm tắt John Robert Morrison’s rendering of "Superintendent" into" 领事 "in the Treaty of Nanking has been called into question lately. This paper argues however that his translation is solidly grounded in the changed situation since the East India Company’s trade monopoly in China was ended and the British government started to appoint a Superintendent of Trade to China. The controversy over the rendition of this term highlights the importance of a firm grasp of the historical background and related documents in diachronic studies of translation. Tóm tắt 本文尝试证明马儒翰在《南京条约》中以"领事"一词翻译Superintendent并非误译,而是有其历史原因,且是自1834年英国东印度公司在华贸易垄断权结束、英国派遣商务监督到来后发展而来的合理翻译。由此,本文期望能以一具体个案来说明历史背景及资料的掌握对翻译史研究的重要性。
