Tóm tắt On the basis of previous studies, the paper argues that Chinese words share a property of roothood. The paper discusses this property and attributes it to the historical development of Chinese, i.e., the inflections of Proto-Chinese have been dropped as this language has undergone a sound change in the history. Some related issues caused by the roothood of Chinese words are also discussed. It is argued that roothood constitutes a very important characteristic of Chinese words, and that this property should be recognized in the studies of the history of the Chinese language as well as Modern Chinese grammar.
