Tóm tắt Chinese has the VO word order, as English does, but its relative clause (RC) is prenominal, which is typologically rare. Thus Chinese RC might be a difficult structure to acquire for learners whose first language is English. Based on a corpus analysis of Chinese RCs produced by native English speakers, this study investigates the distribution of different types of Chinese RCs and the accountability of three typological generalizations for the patterns found. The corpus data show that the distributional patterns of Chinese RCs produced by second language learners conform to varying degrees to the three typological formulations derived from natural language observations. Moreover, typological generalizations vary in their strength and interact with each other, with animacy being ranked the strongest, accessibility the second, and embeddedness the weakest. Furthermore, animacy accounts for the partial disagreement between the patterns found in our corpus and those predicted by the latter two typological assumptions.
